Santorini is alert where hundreds of earthquakes were discovered on the Greek island

Greek Prime Minister Kiriacos Mitsotakis urged people on Santorini Island to “adhere to calm” after a rise in seismic activity that raised concerns about a strong earthquake.

Emergency services were deployed in the famous tourist destination – and the neighboring islands in the Aegean Sea – after more than 200 tremors were registered under the sea in the region during the past three days.

Several earthquakes were measured over 4.5 on the Richter scale.

While Greek seismologists say the activity is not associated with a Santorini volcano, they admit that the pattern is a cause of concern.

“We have a very extensive geological phenomenon to deal with it,” said Mr. Mitsotakis.

“I want to ask the island's residents, first of all, to remain calm and listen to civil protection instructions.”

Warnings were sent if safety is alert about the possibility of rock slices to people on the island, while many earthquakes were calm loudly.

The authorities have banned access to some coastal areas, including the old port of the island, near the slopes.

The population and visitors were notified of avoiding large interior gatherings and areas where the rock slices can occur. The hotels were also directed to the drainage of swimming pools to reduce the damage of the potential buildings caused by the earthquake.

Schools were closed throughout Santori and the Aegean Sea Islands near AMGIS, Anafi and iOS.

The fire and rescue teams that arrived on the island on Sunday created tents as a starting area inside the basketball field next to the main hospital of the island.

“We arrived last night, a team of 26 rescue men and a single rescue dog,” said the Dean of Fire, adding that many residents spent tonight in their cars.

Many local population and tourists are concerned. “I never felt anything like that and with this hesitation – an earthquake every 10 or 20 minutes,” said Michels Jerontakis.

“Everyone is worried even if some of us hide that does not cause panic, but everyone is concerned.”

Additional flights are scheduled to help leave people, while some have chosen to leave through the phrase.
