Emergency state in Santorini after thousands of earthquakes: Sciencealert

The Greek government has just declared a state of emergency on Santorini Island, where earthquakes shake the island several times a day and sometimes just minutes away.

The “earthquake squadron” also affects the other near islands in the Aegean Sea. It has gradually started with many high school (less than 3) and mostly unacceptable earthquakes in late January. However, at the beginning of February, seismic activity intensified as earthquakes became larger and more frequent.

So far, several thousand earthquakes have been registered in the past two weeks. Up to 30 per day was higher than 4.0 – most of them are at a depth of less than 10 km, which is large and cheerful enough to be felt by people who live in the local islands.

These large earthquakes resulted in rock waterfalls along the coastal slopes of the islands, as well as slight damage to weak buildings. It was the largest earthquake so far 5.1 on February 6, which was also perceived in the capital and Athens, as well as on the island of Crete and in parts of Türkiye, more than 240 km away.

Santorini is usually a famous tourist destination, now almost empty. During the past week, about 11,000 vacationers and locals left the island, as many fear seismic activity that a volcanic eruption will explode.

Not strange for earthquakes

This region of the world is not alien to earthquakes. Greece is one of the most active areas in Europe.

The current seismic activity is located near Anydros, an uninhabited island, about 30 km northeast of Santorini. This region is located inside the volcanic arc of the “Hellenic Integration Zone”, where the African tectonic plate slides slowly under the European plate (specifically from the IGED panels). The area hosts volcanoes, in addition to many weak areas of the shell – what Earth scientists often call “errors”.

Santorini itself is CALDERA often mired – a hole formed as a result of volcanic activity over the past 180,000 years, with its last eruption in the fifties. Earthquakes can be connected to volcanic activity – specifically, the movement of magma below the surface.

However, this earthquake sequence does not fall under Santorini. Local scientists who watched Santorini have not reported any change to indicate that the current seismic activity is a pioneer in another Santorini eruption. Instead, the earthquakes appear to be in line with the mistakes between Santorini and the neighboring island.

It is known that nearby errors have produced earthquakes before. For example, in 1956, an earthquake of 7.8 also produced a harmful tsunami and quickly followed the shore of height 7.2. More than 53 people died as a result of this earthquake, subsequent and tsunami. Many were injured.

Tectonic earthquakes occur when stress accumulates in the Earth's crust suddenly, causing rupture along an error and release of energy in the form of seismic waves.

Moderate to the main (known as Mainhocks) is usually followed by a smaller earthquake (known as the final tremors) that gradually decrease in size and frequency over time. This is what earthquake scientists call a Mainshock -AFTTSHKK sequence.

Some sequences behave differently and do not show a single, distinguished event. Instead, it includes multiple seismology of a similar size that occurs over days, weeks, or even months. These types of sequence are what earthquake scientists call “earthquake swarms”.

The 1956 earthquake was a major sequence – after the mixed, as wireless tremors continued after at least eight months of the main instrument. However, the current current seismic activity near Santorini, at least from February 7, is characterized by thousands of earthquakes, many of them with sizes ranging between 4.0 and 5.0.

This indicates that it is likely to have an earthquake.

Seismic swarms are often associated with fluid movement in the Earth's crust, and the resulting seismic activity is usually less dramatic than the sudden movement of the main main movement.

Seismologists are interested in distinguishing between the main instrument sequences – after the instrument and the earthquake secrets because it can help them understand the processes that push these phenomena better.

An earthquake is still possible
