“When I talk to patients, many of them told me that the journey to get a diagnosis takes a long time,” said Dr. David Vayyangle, professor and chairman of the UF Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology.

“They basically spin the wheels from time to time, looking for the outcome, looking for that decision,” Vajjancourt said.

Vaillancourt says the statistics surrounding Parkinson's diagnosis are impressive, and this new AI technology could change that significantly.

“Diagnosis accuracy is between 55 and 78% in the first five years of a patient's journey,” Vaillancourt said. “So if there were 100 people diagnosed with Parkinson's disease within the last five years, there would be around 55-75 people, there would be a correct diagnosis, and the rest would not be the correct diagnosis.”

He says the software detects diseases faster and remembers accuracy over 96%.

According to Vaillancourt, the technology is unique and can work with any type of MRI software.

“The typical patient with Parkinson's disease will see a neurologist,” Wayyancourt said. “The neurologist will order an MRI.”

Vaillancourt said neurologists can use AI software along with existing technologies to help them study these scans and look for changes in brain degeneration.

“It looks like a fingerprint in the brain,” Vayantur said. “So you know, you might read your thumbprint to open the phone and open the phone to say, 'Yes, open it' or 'No, keep it locked', that's basically what we do. ”

What's next:

He says this doesn't tell the doctor what to do, but it could help them see things more accurately and make decisions about the patient's treatment and needs.

Vaillancourt says it could help patients receive appropriate treatment for diagnosis.

He says the technology could be a major step forward in advancing drug development for the disease in the long term.

“There is no drug for Parkinson's disease that corrects the disease. It has never been approved. Part of the reason may be drug therapy, but part of the reason is because the patient in the trial may not have received the correct diagnosis.”

“If you can use this tool and say that 10% of patients in that trial may not have actually had the illness you thought, then the drug could probably actually look effective,” Vaillancourt said. “It might actually help more drugs get approved.”

Researchers say the software is awaiting approval from the US Food and Drug Administration and hopes doctors will start using it along with existing technologies.
