Nepal marks the anniversary of 10 years of the earthquake that killed thousands

Katmandu, Nepal (AP) – Nepal celebrated the tenth anniversary of the 2015 devastating earthquake with a memorial ceremony on Friday attended by senior officials who pledged to be better ready to face future disasters.

Exactly 11:56 am, which was the time of the earthquake on April 25, 2015, Prime Minister Khadgha Brasad Oli, senior ministers, officials and diplomats stood, and they got a minute of silence on the anniversary of the murder at the rivers tower site and crushed 180 people.

The 7.8 -year -old earthquake was killed early from 9,000 people, wounded more than 22,000 and was damaged by about a million homes and building.

“There was a great loss in both lives and property, but I managed to recover and rebuild successfully.” Oli said. “Nepal showed flexibility.”

Oli was joined by the ministers and diplomats from the countries that helped Nepal in rescue and recovery and later reconstruction efforts to light the candles on the anniversary of the lives lost in the disaster.

About 80 % of the structures damaged by the earthquake were rebuilt, as all schools and public buildings were upgraded to new safety standards, according to Anil Boukheel, who headed the authority to reduce national risk and disasters for years until last month.

Up to 95 % of the houses damaged in rural areas, while there is less in urban areas, mainly due to issues such as disputes over ownership or reconstruction.

Families were granted 3000 dollars to rebuild their homes and their offices were established by the government in all areas that were equipped with engineers and experts to help them rebuild.
