New cases of coronavirus in the state include a legislator, an actor and an employee of the medical center

HONOLULU (KHON2) – The Department of Heath Hawaii has declared that all cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) here in Hawaii are travel related. There are 10 new cases, including a local legislator, a health worker and a Hollywood actor. They are all adults.

The Senate offices were asked to close Thursday after Hawaii state senator Clarence Nishihara discovered Thursday morning that he was positive for the virus.

“I felt like I had nothing to think that I was testing positive,” said Senator Clarence Nishihara.

Nishihara said he went to an emergency care facility for testing last Thursday after suffering from cold symptoms since late February when he returned to Hawaii from Las Vegas. He noted that he had a fever before traveling, but that he has recovered.

“I always had my cold, but I didn’t have a fever or anything like that was told to me when I took the tests and that seemed to be going well,” said Nishihara. “So I figured it was fine, they didn’t think I had it, so I went back to work.”

Now the people with whom Nishihara was in close contact are tested. He remains isolated at home.

“I feel like I have a slight cold. I don’t feel anything else. I never had a headache. I never had one and the fever never returned. I don’t have a cough. I have a little congestion, ”said Nishihara.

In an interview published on Facebook, Nishihara said the COVID-19 tests are subject to doctor’s approval, so he couldn’t get tested right away, but he encourages others to fight for the tests.

“If you think you should get tested and the availability of tests is available, you should get tested,” said Nishihara.

KHON2 also learned actor Daniel Dae Kim is isolated in his Hawaii home after being tested positive.

He recently returned to the New York Islands, one of the places where the virus is most prevalent. During his flight, he began to feel sick.

“For several weeks, I have been in New York to film a role in a television series …”, explained Kim. “This show, like everyone else ended up stopping production, and when he did the first thing I wanted to do was go back to Hawaii and my family.”

“I was asymptomatic during this period. As the flight was about to land, I started to notice sore throat irritation, which is not like how I usually get sick, “said Kim.

Another person from New York, this time an employee of the Tripler Army Medical Center, also tested positive for the virus. This person began to develop symptoms after returning to Oahu and took the precaution of isolating themselves at home. He went to be tested after being informed that a person with whom he was in close contact had tested positive for the virus.

This is the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in the military community in Hawaii. Tripler said it worked to see if other people might have been exposed and would notify those people.

In Maui, two Maui residents tested positive after returning from a trip to Europe together. Officials tell KHON2 that these people isolated themselves immediately after returning home and are being monitored by the Hawaii State Department of Health.
