Manila: The US Geological Survey said a shallow magnitude 6.7 earthquake hit the central Philippines early Tuesday morning, although no tsunami warning or immediate reports of damage were issued.

The quake struck 68 km southeast of Masbate island in the Bicol region at 8:03 am (0003 GMT).

The US Geological Survey said in a statement: “There is a small possibility of injuries and damage.”

“Recent earthquakes in this region have caused secondary hazards such as landslides and liquefaction that may have contributed to the losses.”

In the city of Iloilo in neighboring Western Visayas, about 400 kilometers (250 miles) southwest of Masbate, residents fled their homes.

“It was amazing and powerful,” Police Colonel Eric Dumbal told AFP.

“Almost everyone inside the buildings rushed to the streets. Even now, they are still outside.”

Residents in eastern Visayas, hundreds of kilometers from Masbate, told AFP that the quake was “very, very strong.”
