Karachi/Pampa Cote, Afghanistan (Reuters) – The earthquakes that led to the flattening of villages in eastern Afghanistan this month of homes and livestock, the only assets owned by most families, left the survivors who are almost not heading to rebuilding as the aid runs.

At least 2,200 people were killed and more than half a million people were affected when a strong earthquake struck on the night of August, followed by a series of strong final tremors. The earthquakes left tens of thousands of people without shelter, with some fear of landslides.

Abdel -Ghrou, 52, lives with his 10 -year -old family under the linens sheet in Bamba Cote, a village in the eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan, since it hit earthquakes. “We only need one tent,” he said, adding that officials refused to register his damaged house as uninterrupted.

“In Afghanistan, families store wealth in homes, lands and livestock, so when earthquakes destroy these origins, the entire public budgets collapse overnight,” said Jennifer Break Motazashvili, a professor at the University of Pittsburg, who specializes in government in the fragile states.

More than 1.3 million animals were influenced by Nangarhar and the worst, with the destruction of grain stores and irrigation systems, threatening food supplies and the following agricultural season.

More than 7,000 livestock were killed and seven irrigation systems were destroyed, with other damage, according to the Norwegian Refugee Council.

“When these inputs disappear, you see fewer production, high food prices and long -term damage to nutrition and health, especially for the poorest families,” said Ilan Nuwi, head of disaster economics and climate change at Victoria University in Wittton.

The Taliban authorities say more than 6,700 homes have been destroyed. Families are still in tents with shakes continuing.

Thomas Parfield, head of the American Institute for Studies of Afghanistan, said that the next winter will lead to bad crisis and that contracts of war and immigration mean that they are less than relatives to help rebuild.

Earthquakes add depression to an economy that was beaten due to sanctions, frozen assets and reducing aid since the Taliban acquired in 2021, while more than two million deportations from Pakistan and Iran this year have been strained by more food and housing.

“The construction was a huge employer who disappeared after the Taliban acquisition, the NGO sector is shrinking with aid discounts, and even the public sector under pressure,” said Ibrahim Bahs of the International Crisis Group.

“Every year it brings drought and floods, and now earthquakes above it, which doubles the face of the Afghans tragedy.”

The United Nations has resumed $ 140 million in aid, but delayed pledges as donors focus on Gaza and Ukraine and resist the Taliban financing because of its restrictions on relief workers.

Analysts said that some aid had falter to follow the earthquake, from tents to food supplies, but it is almost not enough.

Obaid Allah Bahir, assistant lecturer at the American University in Afghanistan in Kabul, said: “The emergency aid is a towel wet in a forest fire, and the gap will not block.” He warned that aid flows have already decreased sharply in a two -decade -long country, and that “the real impact will only start the offer next year.”
