Relief operations intensified with successive earthquakes in Mindanao

BUTUAN CITY – Government relief operations are in full swing across Mindanao as residents reel from successive strong earthquakes that have struck the island in recent days, including the latest 6.0-magnitude quake that struck Surigao del Sur late Saturday.

The earthquake was tectonic in origin and registered strong intensity in parts of Davao and Surigao provinces.

Authorities were still assessing structural damage in the affected towns, including Tago and Surigao del Sur, where access to the Tago-La Paz Bridge remained limited to light vehicles.

In a warning issued on Sunday by the municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Board, the bridge remained passable, but with one pass at a time for all vehicles and no stopping zones during traffic.

“Heavy six-wheeler trucks are permitted only in unloaded condition while 10-wheeler trucks are advised to take alternative routes or wait for clearance,” the advisory read.

As assessment and verification efforts continue, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has assured the public that relief assistance will remain uninterrupted to help families recover.

DSWD-Caraga Region (DSWD-13) reported that more than 70,000 families or 253,938 individuals from 199 barangays across Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Dinagat were affected by the series of tremors.

“As of 4 a.m. on October 12, all 2,933 families (11,317 individuals) who took shelter in 58 evacuation centers have returned home, while nearly 7,000 families continue to stay with relatives and friends,” the Department of Social Welfare and Development said in its latest update.

The agency added that eight homes were completely destroyed and 696 other homes were partially damaged.

Humanitarian aid sent to affected populations has already reached Php400,129.68, which included aid from other groups and organizations.

It also reported standby relief resources worth Php168.7 million, including Php2.7 million in reserve funds and Php166 million in food and non-food items. (Palestinian National Authority)
