Sirens sound in Whatcom County during an earthquake drill Thursday

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – Neighbors living near tsunami warning towers along the Whatcom County coast should not worry when the towers' tsunami sirens are activated on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2025, at 10:16 a.m. as part of the annual Great ShakeOut event.

People near the towers will hear the real wailing sound of the siren for about two minutes. This will not be the sound of the Westminster Chimes used during the monthly tests.

Tsunami siren towers are located at Blaine, Birch Bay, the Lome Peninsula (near the Casino and near Hills Pass), Point Roberts, Sandy Point, and at Bellingham Harbor. This siren is designed to be heard by people outside up to 500 feet away.

NOAA weather radios set to receive the required monthly testing typically activate during this exercise.

The Great ShakeOut is a global initiative that takes place every year on 10/20 at 10:20 a.m. each year as a way to raise awareness of what to do in the event of an earthquake. Frequent participants are public institutions (government offices, schools, etc.) and companies.

Each state organizes its own major shock campaigns and training, including Washington.
