Canterbury earthquake reconstruction crowned Best Home in Architectural Awards

“The house respects tradition through its form and materiality, while perforated panels allow a dynamic play of light, creating layered and filtered interior spaces.

“Its orientation towards the west is consistent with street dimensions and ensures future protection for growth and financial stability,” the judges said.

Coll worked within design and budget constraints, and many elements of the original building were retained, including the garage, fences and driveway.

“Despite its deterioration, the garage, fences and driveway now have a patina to embrace,” Cole said.

Cole said he took into account the owner's environmentally focused values ​​and limited budget, leading to the preservation of on-site elements

“By expanding on this aesthetic and considering the couple’s love of some of the more traditional elements of their previous home, we discovered Shoin-zukuri and Sukiya-zukuri, who combine the aesthetics of wabi-sabi with the interplay of light and shadow – reminiscent of an ancient villa,” Cole said.

'Red Pine Villa' has also received the 2025 ADNZ Resene National Award for a New Home up to 150sqm and the ADNZ Resene Kaitiakitanga National Award.

In total, eight projects were recognized nationally at the 2025 ADNZ Resene Architectural Design Awards.

Architectural Designers New Zealand CEO Keren Davis congratulated all the winners and noted the majority of the Canterbury regions.

Figure & Ground's Sam Connell won the National Award for a new home between 150sqm and 300sqm on Macandrew Lane in Wanaka.

Another big winner on the night was Tauranga designer Adam Taylor from ATA.

His Rhythm and Greens project at Mount Maunganui won the National Award for Residential Alterations and Extensions, and the National Home Interiors Award.

ADNZ judges described Bach as a beautifully-scaled architectural intervention that transforms a traditional dwelling into an experience of light, rhythm and tranquility.
