Several earthquakes have struck the coast of Indonesia in the past 24 hours: USGS
Four earthquakes have struck the Indonesian coast in the past 24 hours, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
The magnitude of the earthquakes ranged between 4.7 and 5.9, which is considered a strong earthquake capable of causing major damage. The 5.9-magnitude quake struck late Tuesday about 40 miles, or 65 kilometers, from Gorontalo and at a depth of about 70 miles, or about 110 kilometers, according to a USGS map.
Just two hours ago, another earthquake measuring 5.0 occurred in Papua Province, Indonesia, about 110 miles (178 km) west-northwest of Apipora. On Wednesday, two more earthquakes hit the coast, with a magnitude of 4.7.
No injuries or damage were reported, and no tsunami warnings were issued.
Why does it matter?
Indonesia lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a tectonic zone characterized by frequent and sometimes devastating earthquakes and volcanic activity. The country is considered highly vulnerable due to its location at the convergence of several major tectonic plates, including the Indo-Australian, Pacific and Eurasian plates.
Indonesia has a history of catastrophic earthquakes, including the 2004 Indian Ocean disaster, making continuous earthquake monitoring and preparedness critical to minimize human casualties and damage to infrastructure.
What do you know?
A USGS seismic map recorded four seismic events along the Indonesian coast on November 4 and 5.
While the sizes and depths of epicenters varied between events, three of the four occurred offshore, limiting the immediate impact on residents but highlighting ongoing tectonic activity in the area.
Tectonic complexity in Indonesia results from the convergence of multiple plates.
Most earthquakes occur along subduction zones, where the Indo-Australian plate dives beneath the Eurasian plate. These areas can generate strong earthquakes and tsunamis.
Slip and transform faults also contribute to the seismic hazard profile. The geological situation means that moderate and strong earthquakes are frequent, and the region is among the most active in the world, as evidenced by decades of seismic history and recent similar shocks in the region.
The series of earthquakes that struck Indonesia follows an uptick in global seismic activity, with similar incidents recently reported in the Caribbean, Afghanistan and Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. Twenty-two earthquakes were recorded in the Kamchatka region during a single day in early November 2025, indicating the potential for earthquake swarms in highly active areas.
These groups stress the importance of continuous monitoring in places like Indonesia, where densely populated coastlines and infrastructure are vulnerable to major tectonic hazards.
While the recent earthquakes to hit Indonesia did not generate tsunami warnings, past events have shown that similar offshore quakes can trigger devastating waves. Preparedness, such as implementing early warning systems and community drills, remains a top priority to reduce loss of life – especially in tsunami-prone communities.
What people say
USGS Earthquake Center website: “Volcanic arcs and oceanic trenches that partially surround the Pacific Basin form the so-called Ring of Fire, a region where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are frequent.”
What happens next
Earthquake monitoring will continue in Indonesia, as aftershocks and additional events remain possible after a series of large earthquakes. Local and international agencies are expected to assess potential impacts on infrastructure and prepare for potential tsunami warnings.
Updates are expected from the USGS and local seismic agencies in Indonesia as information is revised and new data is released.
