An earthquake in Laos shakes Hanoi and northern Vietnam

According to the Institute of Earth Sciences of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the focal depth of the earthquake was about 10 kilometers. The epicenter of the earthquake was approximately 150 kilometers from Hanoi and 140 kilometers from Thanh Hoa Province, north-central of the country.

Hanoi residents, especially those living in high-rise buildings, clearly felt the impact.

Nguyen Hung Hanh, 32, who lives on the 16th floor of an apartment building in My Dinh, said she was lying in bed when she felt the walls and curtains shake violently for 10 seconds.

In Ha Dong Ward, Tran Van Long reported that items on his table and TV shelf shook twice in a row.

Similar tremors were also recorded in Hanoi's suburban areas, including the neighborhoods of Xuan My and Quoc Oai, as well as in the provinces of Phu Tho, Son La and Lai Chau, where residents reported feeling the ground shake slightly for a brief period.

Hoa Van Province, which shares a border with Thanh Hoa, is located along the Ma River fault zone. This is the major seismically active tectonic fault system in northwest Vietnam and is capable of generating large earthquakes.

The fault zone extends from Dien Bien and Lai Chau provinces in Vietnam all the way to Thanh Hoa and continues into Laos, an area that is often exposed to minor earthquakes due to this geological activity.
