San Ramon, California, was hit by a 3.3 magnitude earthquake on Monday, November 17 at 10:47 p.m., the East Bay Times reported. The epicenter was 2.4 miles southeast of San Ramon.

According to the USGS, a total of eight earthquakes struck the area on November 9 within a three-hour period.

This area is located on the seismically active Calaveras Fault, a branch of the San Andreas Fault Zone. The rift zone is 1,200 kilometers long, according to the American Museum of Natural History website, and forms the boundary between the North American and Pacific tectonic plates.

According to an article in the International Business Times UK edition, the recent earthquake is not attributed to the widening of the San Andreas Fault by experts.

The Calaveras Fault, on which San Ramon lies and which caused Monday's quake, regularly causes tremors in the area. However, the northern part of the fault is moving only 2-3 mm per year, according to the USGS, and its central part is moving only 14 mm per year.
