An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 was recorded in Fuengirola: this is what the residents of Malaga province felt

A magnitude 4.8 earthquake with an epicenter in Fuengirola was recorded on Friday, December 5 (initially reported by Spain's National Geographic Institute as magnitude 4.2). The earthquake occurred at 10:38 a.m., at a depth of 77 kilometers, and was felt by residents of various areas of the province and in the city of Malaga.

According to sources at IGN, the earthquake was also felt in other Andalusian provinces such as Granada, Cordoba and the Guadalquivir region. In Málaga, people on the Costa del Sol, from Estepona to neighboring Motril, noticed (the earthquake was felt in Benalmadena, Chilches, Torrox and Nerja). Inland, the earthquake was felt in Ronda, Antequera and Alhorín de la Torre. Almost all users reported a slight tremor that lasted between 2 to 5 seconds.

Juan Gonzalez explains: “I felt it in Arroyo de la Miel at 10.38. I live on the top floor of a four-storey building. It was like the strong vibration you feel in a train when it changes course.”

Earthquakes of this size are not common, but according to sources at the Seismological Institute, they are “not unusual either,” as they are recorded “from time to time.” On Monday 1 December, the National Geographic Institute (IGN) recorded another 3.2 magnitude earthquake in the early hours of the morning, with its epicenter in Estepona. The earthquake occurred at six in the morning and was at a depth of 52 kilometers.
