A 7.0 magnitude earthquake strikes the remote border area between Alaska and Canada

Today, Saturday, a strong earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale struck a sparsely populated area near the border between Alaska and the Canadian Yukon Territory, according to the US Geological Survey.

According to the USGS, the epicenter was located about 230 miles (370 kilometers) northwest of Juneau, Alaska, and about 155 miles (250 kilometers) west of Whitehorse, Yukon.

In Whitehorse, RCMP Sgt. Calista McLeod said officers received two 911 calls related to the shaking.

“I definitely felt it,” McLeod said. “There are a lot of people on social media, and people have felt it.”

Alison Baird, a seismologist with Natural Resources Canada, noted that the Yukon region closest to the epicenter is known for its rugged, mountainous terrain and very small population.

“Most people reported things falling off shelves and walls,” Baird said. “It doesn't look like we've seen anything in terms of structural damage.”

The quake occurred at a depth of about 6 miles (10 kilometers) and caused several smaller aftershocks.

Despite the strong tremors, both the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center and the National Weather Service confirmed that the event did not pose any tsunami risk to the West Coast or nearby coastal communities.
