COVID clinics are busier than ever after school rules change

Parents and parents of runny school children gathered at a breathing clinic in northern New South Wales to test the children and return them to school.

Wayne Jones, CEO of the North New South Wales Regional Health District, has confirmed an increasing number of COVID tests.

“Over the past few days, 345 tests have been done on Monday, 529 on Tuesday, and 459 on Wednesday across our local health districts,” he said.

“The jump isn’t small, it’s great,” he said.

“It’s inconvenient for everyone. But I’m told that most of the increase is in children, so people are very well at this new expectation in the public health order.”

Mr Jones said the goal was to identify positive cases early.

“Children usually don’t want their parents or caregivers to think they have the flu because they usually have low levels of symptoms,” he said.

“We want to make sure it’s flu, not COVID.”

He confirmed that 80% of people get test results within 24 hours.

A NSW Ministry of Education spokesman confirmed that the latest COVID guidelines for schools do not apply to infant centers.

She said a runny nose or a simple cough was enough to send the child home until the parent or caregiver had a negative COVID result.

“Following advice from NSW Health, parents and caregivers are cautioned not to send children to school when they are sick, even if they have the mildest flu-like symptoms,” she said. It was

“Students and staff with flu-like symptoms must submit a copy of the negative COVID-19 test result before being allowed to return to school.”
