A massive earthquake strikes a remote area in Alaska

The state of Alaska was hit by a strong earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale on Saturday.

Reports stated that the epicenter of the earthquake was in a remote area near the border between Alaska and Canada. It occurred at 11:41 a.m. local time.

“The mainshock has been followed by more than 20 magnitude 3 aftershocks so far, with the largest aftershocks ranging from M4 to M5.1,” the Alaska Earthquake Center said in a Facebook post.

While no injuries or damage were reported, Canadian officials say they have received calls from residents in nearby Yukon territory.

“Most people have reported things falling off shelves and walls. It doesn't seem like we've seen anything in terms of structural damage,” said Alison Baird, a seismologist with Natural Resources Canada.

Tremors were felt as far away as Juneau, Alaska, about 230 miles southeast of the quake, and Whitehorse, Canada, 155 miles east of the quake.

“I definitely felt it,” RCMP Sgt. Calista McLeod told the Associated Press. “There are a lot of people on social media, and people have felt it.”

Despite the strong presence of the earthquake near the coast of Alaska, it did not trigger any tsunami warning.

The community closest to the earthquake, Haines Junction, Canada, has a population of about 1,000 people.
