Arrow actor didn’t know she was playing Oliver Queen’s daughter during casting

Arrow actor Katherine McNamara reveals that she wasn’t told she played Mia, the daughter of Oliver Queen and Felicity Smoak, until she landed the role.

The arrowActor Katherine McNamara was not given prior notice that she would be playing Oliver Queen and daughter of Felicity Smoak. After eight successful seasons on The CW,The arrowfinished his race earlier this year. However, as the flagship Arrowverse series, the series turned out well. Right before its series finale, The CW released Crisis on Infinite Earths, a massive crossover that brought together heroes from all corners of the DC Universe. Although billions of lives were saved throughout the event, the Green Arrow gave its life for the cause.

Of course, it was heartbreaking for her daughter, Mia Smoak. McNamara only joined the cast as Oliver and Felicity’s adult daughter over the last two seasons of the show, so the two didn’t spend much time together. Thankfully, Mia’s journey may not be over yet, as a spinoff series,Green Arrow and the Canaries, is still in contention at The CW. The potential show would star McNamara alongside Katie Cassidy and Juliana Harkavy, also reprising their roles from the original series. However, there have been few updates since The CW announced its 2021 schedule.

No matter how things turn out, it’s clear Mia was a memorable role for McNamara. Talk withBuzzFeed, she revealed that she didn’t really know how important her character was to the show until after her casting. McNamara explained that she had received a call fromThe arrow showrunner Beth Schwartz who said: “Hey, we’re so glad to have you. By the way, all you know is a lie. You’re Oliver and Felicity’s daughter, and we don’t know what your name is yet, but we’ll find out. Impressive.McNamara also discussed the generally secretive nature of his hearing process forThe arrow:

The sides weren’t even for something like Mia Smoak. They were for a rookie cop with a different name with a dark past. It was this whole situation in disguise. So I had a completely different mindset. But I just remember having the best time playing with them, really working with them and experimenting in the room, and I felt very comfortable right away.

McNamara’s comments show how important the revelations are to the Arrowverse. The shows are built on jaw-dropping moments that amaze viewers, and Mia Smoak’s reveal certainly qualifies. It makes sense that those working on the show didn’t want to risk it being spoiled up front, even by the actor they ended up playing in the role. Choosing McNamara was clearly the right decision; his Mia matched the rest of the show’s cast perfectly and was also believable as the daughter of Oliver and Felicity.

Fortunately, The arrow viewers haven’t seen McNamara’s latest as Mia Smoak. While the CW’s schedule is pretty busy thanks to scripted programming going through 2021, there is still hope forGreen Arrow and the Canaries. At this point, it seems likely the network would have made some sort of announcement had it not been planning to resume the series in the long term. It is possible that this will take place for the summer of 2021, as it is now a time of year when the networks try to broadcast original shows. Until Mia’s future in the Arrowverse becomes clear, it’s interesting to hear how McNamara landed the gig in the first place.
