A 6.0 magnitude earthquake hits Japan weeks after the Aomori earthquake

A powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Japan on New Year's Eve, with a magnitude of 6.0, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

No tsunami warnings were issued on Wednesday, and no injuries or damage were immediately reported.

It struck about 56 miles east, 91 kilometers from Noda, Japan, in the Pacific Ocean. The area often experiences seismic activity due to its location along the Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates frequently interact.

The quake comes just weeks after a large 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Aomori region, north of Japan's main island of Honshu, triggering tsunami warnings and several aftershocks.

It also comes a day after the region saw another 4.8-magnitude earthquake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Where was the epicenter of the Japan earthquake?

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck about 56 miles (91 km) east of Noda, a town in Japan's Iwate Prefecture, on the northeastern coast of Honshu.

The marine earthquake occurred at a depth of about 25 miles (41 kilometers) below the ocean floor. No immediate major damage or injuries were reported in nearby coastal communities.

Has a tsunami warning been issued?

No tsunami warning was issued following the 6.0 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Noda, according to the US Geological Survey and preliminary assessments by the Japanese government.

This is different from the Aomori earthquake on December 8, which saw the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issue widespread tsunami warnings and waves up to 70 cm high were detected along parts of the Hokkaido and Tohoku coasts.

JMA officials noted that although seismic activity continues to be monitored, there is currently no increased risk of a major tsunami resulting from this event.

The latest period of increased seismic activity began with a 7.6-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Aomori Prefecture at 11:15 pm on December 8.

This major earthquake led to tsunami warnings, temporary suspension of public transportation, power and water outages, and casualties in many provinces.

The US Geological Survey said in a report that at least 52 people were injured across the country due to the quake.

Additional aftershocks and earthquakes — including a magnitude 6.7 on December 12 and a magnitude 5.2 on December 16 — led authorities to issue Japan's first “major earthquake” warning for the region.

The warning, which urged residents to remain alert for a week, was lifted on December 16 after an assessment that seismic risks had diminished.
