Residents' reaction to twin earthquakes in Red River Parish | news

COUSHATTTA, La. — Two earthquakes rocked Coushatta and surrounding areas Thursday, giving residents a surprise jolt early in the morning.

The first case was reported around 7:30 a.m. It was strong enough to be felt by people in Coushatta and surrounding areas, and has become familiar to many.

Facebook posters say they felt it in Martin, Fairview Alpha, Dubberly and other nearby communities.

“I was sleeping and I heard a boom and then a vibration. I wondered, what would that be? I thought maybe I was dreaming about it. But now other people have told me they felt it too. I felt it,” said Rhonda, a Coushatta resident.

The quake, with a magnitude of 3.1, struck about five miles east of Coushatta and at a depth of about 3 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Red River Parish has been involved in natural gas drilling in the Haynesville Shale for nearly 20 years and is also home to several oil and gas injection wells.

“So, it's part of the natural process that if you inject a damper, you have the possibility of starting small earthquakes and reactivating the faults. Otherwise they won't move,” says Professor Juan Lorenzo, Ph.D. in continental margin tectonics and shallow geoseismology.

Not long after that first quake, another followed, surprising people, including a KTBS 3 weather forecaster who says it felt both.

“It felt like the ground was exploding up and down, and the building shifted from left to right. It lasted about 30 seconds, and then it happened again later. It felt like it was stronger, a little shorter,” said Leslie Smith, a KTBS 3 weather observer.

Both earthquakes struck with the same strength and depth as those reported in Red River Parish on December 4 and 11. There was also an earthquake on December 27 in southern DeSoto Parish.

Minor earthquakes also occurred in this general area earlier last year.
