Children struggle to recover from the devastating earthquake that struck Myanmar a year ago

Yangon, 28 March 2026 – Children who lost their homes and loved ones a year ago in the devastating earthquake that struck Myanmar. [1] Save the Children said that children are struggling to cope with their ordeal, calling for the humanitarian needs in the Southeast Asian country not to be overlooked.

The powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar, with its epicenter located near the cities of Mandalay and Sagaing, killing more than 3,800 people, causing widespread destruction and leaving about 6.3 million people in need of immediate assistance. [2]

Some children lost loved ones. Others still suffer from the mental scars they experienced during the horrific disaster – the largest earthquake the country has seen in generations.

Save the Children and its partners are present in most of the earthquake-affected areas in Myanmar, and were among the first to help affected children and families, providing essential life-saving emergency relief items.

The Children’s Charity has helped create safe spaces for children to play and recover, and has provided mental health and psychosocial support to around 30,000 people, including more than 9,000 children, to help them overcome their traumatic experience.

Myat Nyein*, 16, from Shan State, lost his mother during the earthquake. He said he misses her, especially when it was time to do his homework as she always helped him.

Myat Nin* said:

“I think I’ve changed a lot over the past year since the earthquake. I was a bit cheerful before, but not anymore. I feel like I’ve suddenly become an adult. After losing my mother, I can’t go out and have fun with friends like I used to. I also need to help my parents, take care of my elderly grandmother, and take care of my brother.”

Save the Children provided Myat Nin*’s family with immediate life-saving emergency support, including food and water, after the earthquake.

Myat Nin’s family took refuge in a local monastery for a few months before they were able to return to their partially repaired home. Myat Nin* and his younger brother received mental health and psychosocial support to ensure their overall well-being, and child support to cover basic needs, including health and education expenses.

Many homes and schools were destroyed during the earthquake, forcing families and children to live and learn in temporary shelters although most have since returned to their homes.

Save the Children urges donors not to let Myanmar’s children be forgotten while other global crises compete for attention and resources, said Arshad Malik, Save the Children’s regional director for Asia.

“The Myanmar earthquake may have been over in mere moments, but the effects of a disaster like this reverberate long after tragedy strikes. Children in Myanmar continue to suffer from fear, grief and loss. The work our teams have done on the ground amid extremely difficult conditions shows how important it is to put children’s needs first after a disaster strikes – not just in the first hours and days but in the months and years that follow. Rebuilding lives does not happen overnight and requires sustained support.”

Save the Children and its partners distributed food, drinking water and emergency kits containing blankets, sleeping mats, mosquito nets, personal hygiene kits, tarpaulins and ropes for temporary shelters after the earthquake. A year later, Save the Children’s response has reached more than 275,000 people, including nearly 80,000 children.

Save the Children and its partners also screened and treated children for malnutrition and provided emergency health care and first aid services, including treatment of infectious diseases and maternal health care services. The charity also repaired the damaged water points.

Myanmar remains one of the countries in the Asia-Pacific region with the highest humanitarian needs and basic services remain under pressure – particularly in communities already affected by armed conflict and displacement. Currently, about 16 million people – more than 45% of the population – need life-saving assistance and protection services, including 5 million children. [3]

Save the Children has been working in Myanmar since 1995, providing life-saving health care, food, nutrition, education and child protection programmes.
