At least six people were killed in a house collapse in central Afghanistan when a strong 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck the Hindu Kush region on Friday, shaking various parts of Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan.

The six were killed when a house collapsed in the Bajrami district of central Kabul province, according to a statement issued by the Afghan Ministry of Information. One person is also still missing.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 181 kilometers (112 miles) at 1612 GMT, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences.

The earthquake’s strength was initially 5.9, but its strength was later reduced to 5.8.

The tremor was felt in the Afghan capital, Kabul, according to a local resident, Obaidullah Bashir, who wrote on the American social media company X.

The earthquake was also felt by residents of the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the northern region of Gilgit-Baltistan.

Residents of the Indian-administered part of Kashmir also felt the tremor.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department initially measured the earthquake’s strength at 6.2.

A statement issued by the administration stated that the earthquake occurred at 9:13 pm at a depth of 190 kilometers and its epicenter was in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan.

She added that residents of Islamabad, Chitral, Peshawar, Swat, Shangla and other areas felt the tremor.

The federal capital felt strong tremors, prompting the Islamabad Police to take immediate precautionary measures.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ali Nasir Rizvi directed all officers to assess the situation in their areas. He ordered immediate response to any incident requiring assistance.

The IGP also ordered all officers to submit status reports from their jurisdictions without delay.

Rawalpindi Rescue 1122 officials said that no emergency or casualties were reported in the city following the quake.

Bilal Ahmad Faizi, spokesman for Rescue 1122 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, said: “The tremors of the earthquake were felt in different areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Peshawar. However, Rescue 1122 has not received any calls from the public yet.”

Meanwhile, the Punjab Disaster Management Authority said that no loss of life or property was recorded in Punjab following the earthquake.

The local police spokesman said the tremors were felt in Lahore, Mianwali, Jhang, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Potohar district, Sargodha and other areas across the province.

The authority said that the relevant authorities are conducting inspections of government and public buildings to assess any potential damage. The Regional Control Room and District Emergency Operation Centers across Punjab remain operational 24/7 to respond to any incidents.

The authority advised the public to report any damage related to the earthquake through its helpline at 1129.

Earlier today, a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck the border area between Afghanistan and Tajikistan, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ).

Last month, a moderate earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale shook Balochistan’s Khuzdar district and its surrounding areas, although no casualties or damage were reported.

In February, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan, and the quake was felt in Islamabad, Swat, Peshawar, Chitral, and other cities across Pakistan.
