Broad-based disaster training at the University of Nevada, Reno gives students a closer look at what it takes to respond when a major emergency strikes.

More than 180 students are scheduled to participate in Interprofessional Care 2026, a coordinated exercise that simulates a magnitude 6.9 earthquake and subsequent mass casualty event. The training is scheduled to take place next week and is designed to reflect the type of high-pressure scenarios many of them may face in their careers.

Participants include students from the university’s School of Medicine, School of Public Health, and Orvis College of Nursing, along with students from the Paramedic Program at Truckee Meadows Community College.

During the exercise, students will work together using incident management strategies and casualty coordination techniques. This includes triage simulations and discussions focused on the hospital’s incident control system, a structure used in real emergency situations to organize response efforts.

Organizers say the goal is to give students hands-on experience in disaster response while promoting communication and teamwork across different areas of health care. By working through a large-scale emergency simulation, participants are expected to build skills in coordinated care, resource management, and decision-making under pressure.

This exercise is coordinated by the University’s Organizational Resilience, Northern Command, in partnership with campus and community organizations. These partners include Regional EMS, Northern Nevada Public Health, Washoe County School District, and several regional health care providers.

Additional partners include Renowned Regional Medical Center, St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, and Sierra Nevada Veterans Affairs Healthcare System, among others, supporting this effort.

Organizers say exercises like this are key to preparing the next generation of healthcare workers to confront real-world disasters, where coordination and speed of decision-making can directly impact patient and community outcomes.
