An earthquake drill is scheduled for Wednesday, May 6.

Another earthquake drill will be held in Mexico City and seven mostly central states on Wednesday, May 6, as part of the government’s protocol to strengthen public emergency preparedness.

The Mexico earthquake alert will be sounded over 14,191 loudspeakers in Mexico City, as well as in the states of Oaxaca, Guerrero, Puebla, Michoacán, Morelos, Colima and the State of Mexico, at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday.

Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada, accompanied by civil protection officials and workers who will play the biggest role in the simulation, announced the earthquake drill that will take place in the capital and seven states on May 6.

An alert will also be sent to all smartphones stating: “This is an exercise – this is a message to test the functionality of the National Alert System of the Government of Mexico – this is an exercise.” As well as on radio and television.

“Our city knows very well what prevention means,” said Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada. “We learned that in 1985 and again in 2017. Since then, we know that prevention means saving lives.”

The exercise will simulate an 8.2 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter in the Pacific Ocean, 55 kilometers northwest of Acapulco, Guerrero.

In non-exercise situations, the seismic alert is typically activated for magnitude 5 earthquakes with an epicenter less than 200 km away, for magnitude 5.5 earthquakes less than 350 km away, and for all magnitude 6 or stronger earthquakes.

In Mexico City, the drill will be used to prepare for the evacuation of nearly 5,000 government employees. It also aims to enhance the response capacity of emergency services, activate emergency committees, improve coordination with the civil protection councils in the sixteen districts, and promote a culture of prevention among residents and visitors of the capital.

The government has issued some recommendations for people during the drill, including avoiding running, screaming or pushing during the evacuation, retreating to a safe area for the duration of the drill and following the instructions of brigade members if you are at school or work.

With news of earthquake drills scheduled for Wednesday, many were confused to hear the real earthquake alarm sound across Mexico City on Monday morning, after a 5.6-magnitude earthquake was recorded in Oaxaca.
