A minor earthquake shook parts of southeastern Michigan on Monday evening, the US Geological Survey said, startling residents but causing no immediate damage.

The USGS said the 2.7-magnitude quake occurred at 5:32 p.m. EDT about four miles west-northwest of Carlton, an area south of Detroit.

The quake occurred at a depth of about 4.2 miles, below the surface, based on USGS data. It was detected by more than 30 seismic stations and later reviewed by a scientist, indicating a confirmed event.

Small earthquakes of this size are generally mild and are occasionally felt but rarely cause damage. The US Geological Survey reports that thousands of earthquakes occur each year in the United States, and most of them are too weak to notice.

Reports from Chelsea, Dexter, Milan and Saline area residents on social media indicated brief shaking or rumbles, although such low-intensity events often go unnoticed by many people.

Michigan is not known for frequent seismic activity, but minor earthquakes occasionally occur in the area. Monday’s event was one of several small earthquakes recorded near the Detroit area in recent months, all below magnitude 3.0.
