A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Hawaii’s Big Island just before 10 p.m. local time on Friday, according to the US Geological Survey.

The quake occurred as the USGS continues to monitor Kilauea, one of the island’s active volcanoes. Scientists expect the volcano to erupt again within the next few days after multiple eruptions earlier this month.

According to the USGS, the quake struck approximately seven miles south of Hōnaunau-Nāpōʻopoʻo, a community along Hawaii’s southwest coast.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) has released footage showing a tower of lava erupting from the latest episode of Kilauea volcano in Hawaii on Tuesday, May 5. Since December 2024, Kilauea has experienced dozens of eruptions that “lasted a day or less,” according to the USGS.

“The depth, location, and recorded seismic waves of the earthquake indicate that it was caused by stress from the bending of the oceanic plate due to the weight of the Hawaiian island chain,” the USGS wrote in a statement.

Local perspective:

Residents across the western side of the Big Island reported strong to very strong tremors, and several aftershocks followed the initial quake. More than 2,500 people filed reports with the USGS saying they felt the quake.

What’s the next step:

Although the US Geological Survey said the quake was not related to Kilauea’s recent activity, officials are still monitoring the volcano closely and expect another eruption between May 24 and 27.

The US Geological Survey said no tsunami warning was issued following the quake.
