ZURICH (AP) — Norway defeated Canada 3-2 in overtime of the bronze medal match to win its first ice hockey world championship medal on Sunday.
Noah Steen scored the winner 3:32 into overtime. The previous best result for Norway was fourth place in 1951.
In a wild ending, Canada trailed 2-0 when netminder Jet Greaves pulled. Robert Thomas then scored from the slot to narrow the deficit with an unassisted goal with 1:16 left in the final period.
With eight seconds left, captain Macklin Celebrini and Ryan O’Reilly made sure Thomas equalized his second at 2-2, forcing extra time.
Earlier, Emilio Pettersen gave Norway a 1-0 lead in the opening period and Stian Solberg added another with a deflected shot in the second. Goalkeeper Henrik Haukeland stopped 44 shots.
Greaves made 21 saves for Canada.
Canada then had to settle for the bronze medal match a 4-2 defeat to Finland in the semi-finals on Saturday.
The Canadians have fallen short at the World Cup since winning their last and record 28th title in 2023.
In 2024 they finished and became fourth stunned Denmark 2-1 last year in the quarter-finals.
The world ended in disappointment again for Canada this year, despite a lineup that included teen sensation Celebrini as captain and NHL great Sidney Crosby, in addition to several established NHL stars, including O’Reilly, John Tavares and Mark Scheifele.
Canada managed to win all its group matches, including a 6-5 victory over Norway in extra time eliminated defending champion US in the quarter-finals.
But Finland, led by Florida Panthers center Aleksander Barkov, proved too good in the semifinals.
Switzerland and Finland will meet in the final later on Sunday.
