Britain blocks Hasan Piker and Cenk Uygur – both blamed for criticizing Israel

Piker and Uygur said in a post from X Sunday night that they had been blocked from entering the UK where they were due to speak at the SXSW London festival later this week.

The Uighur said he was blocked from boarding a flight to London because he had been “banned for criticizing Israel” and “our government’s oppression of Western citizens on behalf of other countries.”

In response to Uyghur’s post, Picker claimed his visa had been canceled “at the request of Israel” and accused Britain of “betraying ‘liberal values’ in favor of a genocidal fascist foreign government.”

Britain’s Home Office said in a statement on Monday that it had blocked Pyker and Uyghurs from entering the country. It said their travel permission had been canceled “because their stay in the UK may not be in the public interest”. But the statement did not mention their views on Israel.

The ban follows pressure from some British politicians and groups, including Labor MP David Taylor and UK-based Jewish charity CST, to block Piker’s entry.

Piker, 34, is a left-wing political commentator who streams regularly on Twitch, where he has more than 3 million followers. Uygur, a 56-year-old Turkish-American, is the co-founder of The Young Turks, a progressive news commentary program with more than 6 million subscribers on YouTube, and briefly considered running for president in 2024. Picker is Uighur’s nephew and started working for ‘The Young Turks’. Although both commentators are popular among the American left, both have sparked controversy over their views on Israel and have sparked accusations of anti-Semitism in the United States and abroad.

Picker had previously said, “I will vote for Hamas over Israel every time” and “America deserved the 9/11 attacks,” the latter of which sparked controversy by later defining it as “inappropriate.” Piker has positioned himself as a left-wing version of Joe Rogan, but some Democrats don’t believe he should be so closely associated with the party, including Sens. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.), who said they would not appear on his live stream. In a bipartisan resolution filed in April, Reps. Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J., and Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., condemned online anti-Semitism and named Piker as an internet personality who spread “We Applaud Hamas Terror” and downplayed the Oct. 7 attacks. Zack Polanski, leader of Britain’s Green Party, called the ban on Pickers and Uyghurs “a truly grim decision” and said the Labor government was “doing everything possible to silence criticism of the Israeli government.”
