Donald Trump couldn’t help but react to what Hunter Biden is doing online.

There’s something so vintage about Hunter Biden’s sudden Twitter spree. Former President Joe Biden’s son joined the platform in May and this week began posting at a remarkable rate: 102 posts on Monday, 85 on Tuesday, 74 on Wednesday, and so on. (These numbers are courtesy of People.) About 10 or 15 years ago, hardly a day went by without a famous person joining Twitter and going viral for their “clapbacks,” which would be celebrated by then-ascending digital media outlets like BuzzFeed. Now Twitter/X and BuzzFeed are shells of their former selves, and celebrities tend to be a little wiser about wading into the cesspool. But as a cesspool connoisseur—having survived addiction, immense personal loss, and the Republican Party—Hunter Biden apparently didn’t flinch from the opportunity.

Biden’s tweets have highlighted his status as an “ironic icon,” as the New York Times once called him, a sleazy failure whose weakness for drugs and sex workers only endears him to certain demographics, namely progressive but disillusioned millennials and Generation Z. A common theme in his posts is frank, self-deprecating references to his struggle with substances. Biden’s most widely circulated tweet this week was a response to a user who asked him to admit that an infamous bag of cocaine found in the White House during Joe Biden’s presidency belonged to him. “It certainly wasn’t,” the younger Biden wrote. “I would never have forgotten my medicine.” In another response, he clarified that cocaine was actually not his drug of choice. “And at least do it right,” he wrote. “I smoked crack. I would never waste coke snorting it.”

Sometimes these drug references were made in the service of an argument, such as when Biden tried to counter a user’s suggestion that he was a member of the “elite oligarch class.” He responded with a familiar photo of himself, shirtless and cigarette in mouth, taken from the long-ago stolen laptop that became a lightning rod during the first Trump administration. “Do I look like I’m part of the elite oligarch class. By the way, this was taken at a super 8 motel on I95,” he wrote. Other posts, however, seemed to reference his past purely for fun, like when he responded to a meme of himself with a pipe: “I know this might sound petty, but I can’t stand it when people Photoshop a meth pipe into my mouth,” he wrote. “A crack pipe doesn’t have that little bowl at the end. That’s why we can’t trust the AI. Please make the appropriate changes. Thank you for your attention to this.” (This happy ending, of course, refers to a phrase President Trump often uses on Truth Social.)

Elsewhere, Hunter lashed out at CNN’s Jake Tapper and his criticism of the Biden family, coupled with relative disdain for the Trump family’s corruption. He repeatedly attempted to interact humanly with the trolls, trying to find common ground with one who called his family a “disgrace” by pointing out that the user’s profile picture was of Johnny Cash, someone he also considered a hero. He said Cash, like him, had been in trouble with the law and was a heavy drug user, but he got sober and “spent the rest of his life singing for prisoners, drug addicts and people the country rejected because it knew he was one of them.” It was a surprisingly charming little note.

Almost everyone online seems to love Hunter’s Twitter era, responding with a series of familiar compliments: he posts bangers, we’re obsessed, he’s out of them and we’re here for it, etc. He has almost half a million followers. This is all well and good and I agree on one point: thanks for all the lol, Hunter.

Barron Trump has just released his very first product. I tried it. I’m shocked at how much I loved it.

But I kind of hope that this kind of talk stops before he gets, to use a perhaps unfortunate metaphor, to his own reserve. There have already been calls for him to run for president in 2028, calls that Trump himself has responded to. (He’s obsessed, too.) We’re seeing what happens when a handsome nepo baby with an erratic online personality runs for office right now with Jack Schlossberg’s campaign for Congress, and it hasn’t been pretty. As charming and lovable as Hunter is, “very good poster boy” is a great path for him to be in, and we don’t need Peter to propel him to the presidency.

Lest we forget, because it seems like everyone has, it’s only been two weeks since Hunter Biden went on famous anti-Semite and conspiracy theorist Candace Owens’ podcast and called her “probably the most effective communicator I’ve ever heard behind the microphone.” I think it was part of his plan to make his enemies see him as human, but still. Likewise, his defense of his father’s 2024 campaign has been both understandable and inconsiderate. We all need to slow down here. For all we know, Hunter will get tired of tweeting and will drastically reduce his output: 500 tweets per week would be a crazy pace to maintain. If that happens, at least we can always look back on this week of glorious tweets like a decadent cigarette in a Super 8 motel on I-95: a moment worth appreciating.
