His contribution to science was recognized when he was named as a finalist for a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Science New Zealand Awards in Wellington on 26 May.

He describes his career as a “social accident.”
He grew up around aviation and volcanology. His grandfather flew volcanologists in the 1940s, photographing the eruptions at Mount Ruapehu and Mount Ngauruhoe. His father flew helicopters carrying scientists and equipment to volcanoes.
He “made an impression” on the young boy.
When he left Rotorua Boys’ High School, he joined the Scientific and Industrial Research Department as a science student.
He found it “very difficult not to be passionate” about the job that paid him money to go outside and enjoy “the most wonderful features of nature.”
His first “significant introduction” to volcanic crisis came in 1979.
He was in his late twenties when the Karkar volcano in Papua New Guinea erupted, killing two volcanologists.

Feeling cold, Scott saw a “really weird overreaction”, which he attributed to the scientists who had been killed.
Military aircraft were on standby to evacuate “several thousand people” and abandon “industries worth millions of dollars.”
“The volcano wasn’t doing enough to warrant that,” he told authorities.
He worked at the Rabaul Volcano Observatory in Papua New Guinea for about a year under foreign aid.
The Ambae volcano erupted in Vanuatu in 2017, and orders were issued to evacuate about 11,000 residents.
Scott arrived to collect data and evaluate the volcano.
“Guys, you don’t need to evacuate,” he said.
He believed that removing people from the island could have left them “treated as refugees” for years.
This advice was revised nine months later when the risks of eruption escalated.
Helping communities make the right decisions has been one of the most “rewarding” parts of Scott’s job.

For a volcanologist, his half-century of experience has brought him no closer to answering society’s most pressing question: When exactly will a particular volcano erupt? He calls it the “two o’clock on Tuesday” question.
Volcanologists have gotten “really good” at spotting disturbances and recognizing when a volcano is “getting worse,” but events can still give them away.
The August 2012 eruption of Mount Tongariro Te Mare demonstrated unpredictability.
Scientists had tracked the disturbances for months before the phone call came in the middle of the night: “Te Mare volcano has erupted.”
“We were all equally surprised,” he says.
He played a key role in improving how New Zealand monitors and responds to volcanic activity after the chaotic response to the Mount Ruapehu eruption in 1995.
It roared for months before blasting a plume 12 kilometers into the sky in September of that year, sending lahars into three river valleys.
The explosions continued until July 1996.
Suddenly, aviation, transportation, agriculture, health and emergency departments were trying to determine who was responsible and how to respond.
This became the “motivation” for Scott to build the Caldera Advisory Group, linking scientists to response teams.
He helped create the volcano monitoring function and improve the volcanic alert level system used today.

The ongoing postmortem proceedings mean he is unable to talk about the 2019 Whakaari White Island eruption in detail.
He says the eruption “shocked us all for six years” and called it a “sad day.”
The goal of his work became “crystal clear”: to highlight the importance of monitoring volcanoes and improving scientific understanding to help keep people safe.
Developing historical records for Ruapehu, Tongariro and Whakaari to improve future risk calculations remains an ongoing project.
We’ve actually been collecting entries for decades.
Scott has been involved in geothermal system restoration work in Rotorua.
It provided the scientific evidence needed to support the Rotorua Geothermal System Management Plan, which is used by the Bay of Plenty Regional Council and iwi to protect the areas.

Overuse of geothermal water and steam through private wells between the 1960s and 1980s led to the decline or disappearance of many of them.
“It’s not back to its full normal state… but it’s more like hell.”
In his opinion, the proposed changes to the Resource Management Act could “resolve this problem quickly.”
He’s “really worried.”
He says Rotorua residents often “don’t think twice” about the city’s “unique” geothermal environment because they see it every day.
On the other hand, visitors can find the ‘living’ environment ‘disturbing’.
The questions he hears most often are: “Is it safe here?” or “Is it going to explode?”
He replies: “If you see me running, just try to keep going.”

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
