Members of the Filipino community in Newfoundland and Labrador were shocked to learn of the deadly earthquake that struck the country on Monday, and are hoping to ensure those affected are supported.
Memorial University student Gian Albino, who is originally from Cagayan de Oro, a city in the quake-affected province, said watching videos of people having to hide and crawl to safety was difficult to watch.
“A lot of the videos I saw were, like, people chanting, ‘Oh Lord! Oh Lord! Help us, help us,’ and that desperate need for help is a really heartbreaking thing to see,” the 19-year-old albino told CBC News Monday.

Filipinos in NL are concerned about the well-being of family and friends after the earthquake
Monday’s 7.8-magnitude earthquake is the largest that residents of the Philippines have faced this year. This devastation has prompted Filipinos living in the Netherlands to think of family, friends and communities, with plans to make collective efforts to help in disaster recovery. CBC’s Maddy Ryan reports.
Parts of the Philippines were hit by a 7.8-magnitude earthquake — the country’s largest this year — off the coast of Mindanao early Monday. It happened on the first day of the country’s public schools opening after the summer vacation, leading to the destruction of schools, churches and other infrastructure facilities.
The earthquake, landslides and subsequent tsunami had injured hundreds and killed at least 35 people as of Monday afternoon. The death toll may rise in the coming days as more damage is discovered in isolated rural villages.
“It was really devastating, honestly, to see everything that happened there while I was here, living my own life. You know, it’s really heartbreaking to see that,” said Albino, who moved to St. John’s with his family two years ago.
“If I were a student at one of those schools, I never would have imagined being in this place.”

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck parts of the Philippines on Monday, injuring hundreds and killing at least 32 people. Jian Albino, a university student who moved from the country to Newfoundland and Labrador two years ago, told CBC News he was shocked to see the death and destruction.
The Filipino population in Newfoundland and Labrador continues to grow. The 2021 Census reported a Filipino population of 2,270 in the province, with population centers in the Saint John metro area and across parts of Labrador.
“We are united”
In Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Erwin Ponce said he was able to reach some of his family members in the affected area. Originally from the southern region of the Philippines, Ponce founded the Philippine Society in Labrador City in 2019.
“It was shocking. I saw footage of buildings — commercial buildings, schools, churches — destroyed or damaged. A lot of them, like houses that were destroyed. I was shocked,” Ponce said.
“We are very concerned about the situation there, especially regarding the well-being of our family and relatives there… They are not in a good situation right now.”

Ponce said natural disasters are not new to the people of the Philippines, but their frequency does not make dealing with them any easier.
He and Albino expect the Filipino community in Newfoundland and Labrador and beyond to rally around family and friends in the Philippines, and expect fundraising efforts to begin soon.
“I think we should all help each other,” Albino said. “Because we are united.”

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
