We all became hockey fans over the summer
“It was a random night in November, when not a single creature was moving throughout the school and the night was cool.
The basketball jerseys were carefully hung in preparation for the season ahead.
The students all sat cozy in their beds, visions of basketball dancing in their heads.
Unfortunately, this story ended there, because as basketball season came and went, the students at UNC had something new to dream about.
Ice hockey.
Not only the students at our school, but in fact all of North Carolina is involved in the Carolina Hurricanes, the state’s NHL team, and their race to the Stanley Cup. The last time they won was in 2006, making it about 20 years since they reached the Stanley Cup Finals.
Additionally, head coach Rod Brind’Amour is looking to capture another championship for Carolina, as he was the captain during their 2006 title win.
Strangely enough, it’s not just the North Carolina team that has inspired this summer of hockey. New television releases have brought even more support for the sport.
When “Heated Rivalry” first released in November 2025, millions rallied around their admiration for the show and actors Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams, who have since become pop culture icons.
The book and show feature the characters Ilya Rozanov, played by Storrie, and Shane Hollander, played by Williams, and the secret, year-long affair behind their much-publicized animosity on the ice.
While the ‘Heated Rivalry’ craze took over the late fall of 2025 and remained strong into the spring, the phenomenon has persisted. Not only are the lovable characters and the meaning of their story still relevant, but this may have been the start of a cultural obsession with ice hockey.
Less than a year after “Heated Rivalry” came out, another hockey-related series was released. On May 13, 2026, the first season of “Off Campus” aired, another book-to-television novel adaptation in which at least one character plays ice hockey.
Written by Elle Kennedy, the series centers on four Briar University hockey players and their respective love interests. This season focused on the first couple, Hannah Wells and Garrett Graham, as they went through a fake dating trope. Each subsequent season follows a different character and their love interests, some of which were mentioned in the first season.
While it’s still early, I’ve seen enough TikTok edits and discussions about both shows that I have to assume there’s more than irony involved in this double release of a hockey show in just a few months.
While UNC will always be a basketball school, this year proved that the Tar Heels can make room for a little ice.
Between the Canes’ playoff run, the rise of hockey romances like “Heated Rivalry” and “Off Campus,” and the internet’s sudden obsession with players both real and fictional, hockey has somehow become the center of pop culture discussion.
Maybe it started as a joke, a fan-made video, or a show that people watched because of the plot. But somewhere along the way, students and others have come to enjoy these highly addictive series, Stanley Cup victories and a sport that some of us had barely even thought about.
Basketball will always be UNC’s first love. But this summer, it seems like hockey has become something we can enjoy in the offseason.
