Pope Leo sends aid to earthquake-stricken Venezuela

Pope Leo sends an initial emergency donation of €100,000 to Venezuela as rescue efforts continue following devastating earthquakes that have killed at least 164 people and left widespread devastation.

More than 150 people are reported dead, many more injured, and countless more are believed to be trapped after two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela overnight.

As rescue efforts continued and the full scope of the disaster began to emerge, Pope Leo XIV sent an initial emergency donation of one hundred thousand euros through the Apostolic Office of Almoner.

The Holy See says the assistance, which has been coordinated with the Apostolic Nuncio for Venezuela, Archbishop Alberto Ortega Martín, and the Archbishop of Caracas, Archbishop Raul Biord Castillo, is only a first step, with more assistance to follow in response to needs identified by the local church.

The Pope’s contribution comes as Catholic communities across the country open diocesan buildings to shelter displaced families and organize emergency aid through local Caritas networks.

Rescue teams are searching dozens of collapsed buildings following the earthquakes that occurred on Wednesday evening, which reached magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5.

Caracas’ Simón Bolívar International Airport remains closed, while the worst devastation was reported in the coastal state of La Guaira, north of the capital, where dozens of buildings collapsed.

Authorities say at least 164 people have been killed and nearly 1,000 others injured, though officials warn the toll is expected to rise as rescuers continue to dig through the rubble. More than twenty aftershocks shook the region, and the tremors were felt as far away as Colombia.

President Delcy Rodriguez declared a state of disaster and national emergency, describing La Guaira as a “disaster area.”

Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello urged residents to stay outside and away from damaged buildings while engineers assessed the stability of critical infrastructure.

The damage is widespread and severe. Churches, including the Caracas Cathedral and several parish churches, suffered structural damage, while seminaries and other church buildings were also affected.

However, church leaders continue to provide shelter, food and pastoral care to those who have lost their homes.

International help has begun arriving from across the Americas and beyond, as search and rescue teams race against time in hopes of finding more survivors beneath the rubble.
