A 5.5 magnitude earthquake hits the coast of Oregon

While you may think of earthquakes as a western problem for the United States, some of the largest earthquakes in US history have occurred in the east.

BANDON, Ore. – A 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck off the Oregon coast early Monday morning.

The Pacific Ring of Fire was shaken by powerful earthquakes in Japan, the Philippines and Nicaragua

The USGS said the quake occurred at 4:35 PST (11:35 UTC) about 135 miles west of Bandon, Oregon, at a depth of about 6 miles.

A 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck off the Oregon coast early Monday morning.

So far, the USGS says only a few coastal residents have reported feeling the shaking.

It is not known at this time if any damage, injuries or deaths have been reported. However, there is no tsunami danger.

This comes after a 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck Northern California and successive large earthquakes struck Venezuela last Wednesday.
