‘Incapable of moral courage’: Cong’s Khera slams PM Modi for silence on Trump’s Iran remarks at Khamenei funeral
Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Pawan Khera on Sunday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for failing to condemn US President Donald Trump’s latest “provocative and irresponsible” statement on Iran during the funeral of assassinated Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Khera’s remarks came in response to Trump’s statement in which he said he could have eliminated the country’s top leaders “in one fell swoop” as they gathered for Khamenei’s funeral in Tehran.
Khera called Prime Minister Modi a “compromise” and his government incapable of condemning “reckless insinuations of violence by their masters in the United States”.

The Congress leader pointed out that around 10 million people, including an Indian delegation, attended the Ayatollah’s funeral.
“In this context, President Donald Trump’s provocative and irresponsible threats are deeply damaging to the West Asian peace process. What disturbs us is that our compromised Prime Minister and the government he leads are incapable of mustering the moral courage to condemn such reckless insinuations of violence from their masters in the United States,” Khera said in an article on X.
Trump’s one-shot remark
Khera made the remarks after Trump’s statement referring to the large funeral rally in Tehran and suggesting that the rally represented a military opportunity. However, he added that such a move was ruled out as diplomatic efforts continued.
“They’re all here. One shot [and we can take them all out]but we are not going to do it because then we would have no one to negotiate with,” he told the American media Axios.

Trump also said he was surprised to see so many people mourning Khamenei, as he believed many Iranians were against him. “Maybe these are fake tears,” he said, as quoted by the media.
Iran hit back at Trump, saying the Iranian embassy in Armenia said the United States, which celebrated the 250th anniversary of its independence on July 4, could never understand the massive mourning over Khamenei’s death because it “has no civilization, no history, no honor.”
“People can be killed, but not ideals. You killed Ayatollah Khamenei, but in reality you broke a bottle of perfume whose smell spread everywhere. You do not understand these things because you have no civilization, no history, no honor,” the Iranian embassy said.
Khamenei’s funeral, taking place four months after his death in US-Israeli strikes, drew massive crowds, with dignitaries from nearly 100 countries attending the ceremony in Tehran. The ceremony began on July 3 and will end with his burial in his hometown of Mashhad, at the Imam Reza shrine, on July 9. The funeral procession will pass through several cities in Iran as well as in Iraq – Najaf and Karbala. Security measures have been tightened in view of the massive crowds at the funeral of the assassinated leader.
