At least six dead and 21 injured after two earthquakes in Peru

LIMA (Reuters) – At least six people were killed and 21 others injured after two earthquakes struck a mountainous area in Peru, the head of Peru’s civil defense said on Sunday.

The earthquakes, with magnitudes of 5.1 and 3.7, struck on Saturday evening in the province of Chupaca in the Junín region, about 300 kilometers east of Lima, according to the National Seismological Center of Peru on the X website.

The center said that the first earthquake occurred at a depth of 24 kilometers (15 miles) and the second at a depth of 18 kilometers.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Center reported earlier that the first earthquake had a magnitude of 5.6.

Luis Vasquez, head of Peru’s National Civil Defense Institute, told local radio station Xituza that initial reports showed that about 48 homes had been destroyed and another 18 damaged, affecting about 300 people who had been provided with tents.

Houses in the affected communities in Chewbacca are generally rudimentary structures built of mud brick blocks.

Vasquez said emergency teams and firefighters arrived in affected areas early Sunday to remove rubble amid fears that additional victims could be trapped.

Peru is located along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an area that accounts for about 85% of the world’s seismic activity.
