The San Jose Earthquakes look to harness their World Cup energy in the Cali Clásico

The Quakes will make the short trip northwest to Palo Alto to host their cross-state rivals, the Los Angeles Galaxy, in a California Clasico at Stanford Stadium, a raucous college soccer stadium that is usually packed with upwards of 50,000 fans for this special occasion — more than double the capacity of their usual home, PayPal Park (10:30 p.m. ET | Apple TV).

The density of those crowds tends to add more excitement to an already heated match. And with the Bay Area still basking in the glow of its highly successful transformation as a venue for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as well as the excitement around San Jose’s revitalized start to the season, the Bruce Arena squad is keen to seize the opportunity this weekend.

“Obviously we have to have success on the field as well to take advantage of all this,” Arena told reporters the day after the USA-Bosnia match. “But the sport has grown in the country and is definitely well supported in our area, so hopefully that will spell good things for the Quakes in the future, and the league as well.

“The potential here is great,” Arena added. “It’s a great area, the Bay Area, with some of the biggest companies in the world; the demographics are very favorable for our sport.”

Stanford’s shining moment

Stanford University carries a lot of football heritage in its own right.

Its men’s and women’s programs each won three NCAA College Cup national championships, producing many future professional and international players—including Buda—and the original iteration of the stadium hosted several massive 1994 World Cup matches before rebuilding in the 2005-06 season to its current form.

Each visit to the “farm” gives the Quakes another opportunity to introduce themselves to that corner of their sprawling urban area. With German star Timo Werner orchestrating the attack and a 10W-3L-2D record before MLS’s World Cup hiatus saw them tied with the Vancouver Whitecaps for first place in the Western Conference, even after a frustrating 4-0 loss to Antoine Griezmann’s Orlando City on Wednesday, they believe they are building something worth paying attention to.

“Especially with the World Cup being here in town, with everyone showing their love for the game,” said striker Preston Good, whose 11g/2a has made him the best local player in MLS at the moment.

“We’ve got a good team here in town that they can support. So everyone needs to come out, and we have a good chance this year – we’re in first place in the Western Conference, so we’ve got to keep going and keep the fans in attendance, and make the noise.”

Growing game

Remarkably, PayPal Park has yet to host an Audi MLS Cup qualifying match in its decade of existence. Changing this fall is the first task for the Quakes, and winning Saturday’s El Clásico is the next step.

“You can see that football is a little more than what people think,” All-Star defenseman Daniel Mooney said. “This will be a huge boost for US Soccer and MLS moving forward. So I’m really excited to see what he can do.”
