Chemotherapy may accelerate the aging process in young cancer survivors-health
A new study examines the impact of cancer and its treatment on the aging process and finds high expression of age-related genes in young patients with cancer and frail young cancer survivors after chemotherapy treatment Did.

Previous studies have shown that a protein called p16INK4a, which slows cell division, is produced by cells at high levels with age. The team first analyzed cells from 60 survivors and compared them with cells from 29 age-matched individuals without a history of cancer. Expression of the gene encoding p16INK4a was higher in survivors than in controls, indicating accelerated age at 25 years. Nine survivors were frail, exhibiting higher levels of expression compared to non-frail survivors, accelerating the age of 35 years.
The researchers also found that in nine newly diagnosed children and adolescents, the expression was higher after chemotherapy treatment than before.
“Higher expression of p16INK4a in peripheral blood lymphocytes has been described in older people after chemotherapy, but not in young adult survivors before this study,” Dr. Smitherman said.
“This study is important when trying to understand the biological mechanisms that underlie the signs of premature aging in this population,” Smitherman added.
Dr. Smitherman pointed out that elevated p16INK4a expression as a marker of aging may help identify cancer survivors at risk of developing weakness and dysfunction.
“In addition, p16INK4a expression may prove useful as a tool to study treatments aimed at alleviating the early aging effects of cancer treatments,” he said.
