Parasite roundworms could have infested the intestines of one in four people living in Europe during the Middle Ages, a study of hundreds of critical samples found.
Worms-known to experts as parasites and include whipworms and tapeworms-feed by stealing nutrients from the host, which can lead to weakening and disease.
Findings from this study could help fight worm infections in countries that are still endemic, according to researchers at Oxford University.

No longer endemic in Europe, parasites are now estimated to infect about 1.5 billion people worldwide.
Parasites can spread between the host and the egg, leaving the body in the feces and contaminating soil and water.
Their effects can range from mild symptoms to chronic malnutrition and disability—the latter case being more common among infected children.
In their study, infectious disease expert Adrian Smith and his colleagues at Oxford University took samples of human pelvis from 589 tombs buried in seven European sites dating from 680 to 1700. ..
Of these sites, two were in Germany, two in the Czech Republic, and the rest in the United Kingdom-included Worcester Cathedral, including the former Haymarket in York and Stoke Quay in Ipswich.
The team also analyzed the demographics of each graveyard to assess the effect of factors such as age, gender, and community sites on the worm worm transmission rate.
The team has discovered two soil-borne nematodes—Ascaris spp, a giant roundworm. Human Whipworm Trichuris trichiura — All 7 Sites.
On the other hand, two food-borne tapeworms-Diphyllobothrium latum and Taenia spp-were found in four places.
From this, researchers estimated nematode infection rates in the Middle Ages to be 8.5% for T. trichiura and 25.1% for Ascaris. This is similar to the numbers found in populations with modern endemic disease.
Although infection rates did not differ by gender or community size, infection was most common among children.
