5.2 weak earthquake wakes Coromandel, felt by Oakland area

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck the northeast of Wangamata at 3.47 am on Saturday, and was felt by many in Auckland.

A weak earthquake woke Oakland and Coromandel residents on Saturday morning.

The magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck at 3.47 am, 120 km northeast of Wangamata.

According to GeoNet, more than 2,500 people have reported feeling this way.

The earthquake was felt widely by residents across Auckland – a rarity in a city that is one of the least earthquake-prone areas in the country.

One person tweeted, “On the 12th floor of a hotel in Takapuna and I woke up.”

Others reacted by surprise.

The earthquake – as well as light aftershocks – was felt in Obito Bay.

Another said the earthquake was of “reasonable magnitude” to affect Bach at Wangamata.

There were no reports of damage from the weak quake, and the police, fire department and emergency services did not receive any calls.
