West Nile tested positive in Canyon County mosquitoes
So far, the reduction area has tested 1,474 pools this season. Eighteen of them have returned positive to West Nile virus.
According to the Nampa-Canyon County Mosquito Aviation District, Nampa, Idaho, more mosquito samples collected in northern Nampa are West Nile positive. Health officials are encouraging residents of Canyon County to protect themselves from insects.
Last week, five mosquito samples were collected. Canyon County Mosquito Abatement District has eight gravity traps and 120 EVS traps with dry ice bait throughout the county. Insects caught in traps are tested for diseases of vectors such as West Nile.
“The Boise Idaho Institute has identified a positive mosquito pool,” said Jim Landers.
So far, the reduction area has tested 1,474 pools this season. Eighteen of them have returned positive to West Nile virus.
“Because of the increased risk of the West Nile virus, we recommend that you take appropriate precautions to prevent mosquito bites while having fun outdoors on holiday weekends,” Lunders said.
Canyon County Mosquito Aviation District has released a list of the following tips to help prevent infections:
• Eliminate all sources of permanent water that could be breeding grounds for mosquito bites, such as flooded fields, playgrounds, pools, clogged trenches, and old tires. Retaining water for 7 days can cause mosquitoes.
• Every week, flush or replace water in the aquarium and bird bath.
• Avoid storms that drain into urban storm drains or other areas that hold water.
• Avoid dusk and dawn outdoor activities where mosquitoes are most active.
• Wear long-sleeved shirts and trousers in areas where mosquitoes can infest.
• Use DEET, lemon eucalyptus oil, IR3535, or mosquito repellent containing picaridine and follow container instructions.
• Make sure that all screen doors and windows are properly repaired and secured.
• If the site is too large to remove and cannot be processed properly, please notify the district at 208-461-8633.
