COVID-19 virus is minimally mutated since its outbreak, according to Walter Reed researchers

The virus that causes COVID-19 has been minimally mutated since December 2019, according to research by a team of scientists at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research.

The team came to this conclusion after performing genetic analysis of sequences from more than 27,000 individuals infected with COVID-19. The team coordinated 18,514 independent viral genome sequences sampled from individuals in 84 countries and scanned for variations. Analyzes show that the estimates of genetic differentiation after first development are low, indicating that the virus evolved in an almost random process rather than adapting to the human host it encounters.
