4.0 magnitude earthquake near Florida / Alabama line: NorthEscambia.com

The US Geological Survey confirmed a magnitude 4.0 earthquake near the Florida / Alabama line this morning.

The epicenter was near Mount Carmel in northern Santa Rosa County. This is about three miles north of Jay or six miles east of Century.

NorthEscambia.com has received hundreds of reports of ground shaking and even movement of walls and other objects inside buildings from across the region. Most of the reports were in the Century, Flomaton and Jay areas, but spread overseas to Pensacola, Cantonment, and Brewton. Several people have reported minor but weaker shaking, but this has not yet been confirmed.

Escambia County Emergency Director Eric Gilmore said the 519 engine from Escambia’s Fire Rescue Century Station surveyed the Horn area but found no damage.

Jay High School informed that the students are safe. The school felt the earthquake, but no injuries and no damage was found so far.

According to the US Geological Survey, damage is not expected from a magnitude 4.0 earthquake.

It should be noted that sometimes the USGS will accurately update the epicenter and magnitude of the earthquake while analyzing more data.

There was a series of earthquakes in the vicinity from March 6 to April 17 in 2019 with strengths ranging from 1.8 to 2.8. In 1997, a magnitude 4.9 earthquake occurred in the region.
