Donald Trump suspends Real ID amidst coronavirus
President Trump said on Monday that he would delay the deadline to comply with Real ID, a federal warrant that was to be implemented on October 1, preventing anyone without secure ID from boarding a flight.
About two-thirds of Americans currently do not have valid ID because states have been slow to adopt it.
Officials expected a flurry of people at state motor vehicle offices to update their identifications in the coming months, but the virus has made that impossible at the moment, the president said. A delay was therefore necessary.
“We will be announcing the new deadline very soon,” he said.
Real ID was born out of one of the recommendations of the 9-11 Commission, which investigated how the hijackers perpetrated the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
The commission said some of the hijackers were in the country illegally, but were able to obtain valid driver’s licenses which they used to board the planes which they turned into missiles.
The law containing Real ID was passed in 2005 and there was a deadline of May 11, 2011 for states to comply. The Obama administration initiated several delays, ultimately setting the deadline of October 1, 2020.
