The shopkeeper remains in “temporary” buildings, a decade after the 2010 earthquake

A decade after the earthquake destroyed his shop and home, Christchurch store owner Frank Yan still works from a “makeshift” store.

The Addington store, which has a shipping container attached to the building for extra storage and handwritten signage, is very hot in summer and very cold in winter.

“I am happy sometimes, sometimes not happy. Happy because local customers and the community support us.

“I can live on what I make. It’s hard, but I can live on it.”

Yan’s shop and his home above it were on the corner of Roswarn and Slowen Streets.

Both were destroyed in the September 2010 earthquake, forcing him to sell goods on the street and move to a home in the western suburbs.

He spent 14 months unemployed before finding a makeshift location for his shop at a former gas station near the old dairy.

Yan was forced to trade on the street after an earthquake destroyed his shop on Sloane Street in Spridon.

He planned to operate out of the store, between Brougham St and Somerset Cres, for about two years, but a contract in Yan had a hard time finding a new, permanent building.

It’s still temporary. I was just looking for a new place, but it all failed, ” he said.

“I am looking for a new place to transfer my work. It’s very difficult.

“I didn’t think it would be difficult.”

The makeshift store on Brugam Street is an old gas station with a shipping container attached for storage.

The site he used to live on has yet to be redeveloped. Downer Construction uses it as warehouse for a nearby infrastructure project.

The site is owned by a company run by prominent attorney Gerard McCoy, who passed away in May. A company spokeswoman said it was difficult to rebuild.

“The simple answer is that the owners are not developers and they don’t want to be in the situation that the earthquake imposed on them,” she said.

“The process of doing this was slow, tedious, and frustrating. Veteran developers struggle, so it’s tough for beginners.

“It was a very long and frustrating time.”

There are no confirmed plans to rebuild the site yet.
