UNICEF says pharmaceutical companies can produce unprecedented doses of vaccine for COVID-19

NEW YORK (Reuters)-28 manufacturers in 10 countries can produce unprecedented doses of vaccine to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic, UNICEF gets them And distribute it.
UNICEF’s role is part of the COVID-19 Vaccine Allocation Program (known as COVAX, co-led by the World Health Organization), which aims to purchase and provide equitable access to shots. To date, 76 wealthy countries have pledged to participate in COVAX efforts.
UNICEF said 28 vaccine manufacturers had shared annual production plans for the COVID-19 vaccine until 2023. UNICEF’s market assessment “clarified that manufacturers are prepared to jointly produce unprecedented amounts of vaccine over the next 1-2 years.”
However, pharmaceutical companies say that the predictions are “largely on whether clinical trials will be successful, whether pre-purchase agreements will be implemented, whether funding will be confirmed, whether regulatory and registration channels will be streamlined. It depends.”
A safe and effective vaccine is considered essential to ending the pandemic that has killed more than 864,000 people worldwide so far.
UNICEF’s new role in COVAX comes from its position as the largest single vaccine purchaser in the world. The UN agency said it procured more than 2 billion vaccines annually on behalf of nearly 100 countries for routine immunization and outbreak response.
