Our photographers are back at the sites of some of the worst damage caused by the magnitude 7.1 earthquake five years ago. They came back again this year – 10 years after the earthquake – to see how the locations have changed.

The earthquake left many streets in the eastern suburbs, including Bexley Street in Wairowa, submerged under water. The street was later designated in red and most of the homes along it were demolished.

Porritt Park used to be the home of hockey in Christchurch but has become unusable since the earthquakes. A $ 8 million plan to take it back was stalled mid-decade as the council awaited plans for the surrounding residential red district. Hockey is now played at Nga Bona Wai in southwest Christchurch, next to Canterbury Farm Park. Poret Park is still empty

Churchill’s Inn on the corner of Colombo and Battersea Streets is destroyed. It has since been rebuilt, a bit back from Colombo Street.

Several parked cars crashed due to falling bricks. The driver of this vehicle on Manchester Street is believed to have escaped the injury. The street was still a sea of ​​fence and road cones next to vacant spots in 2015. The site is now used as a car park.

The much loved Old Repertory Theater on Kilmore St has been badly damaged by earthquakes. The 83-year-old building has since been “dismantled”, and the site remains empty.

The Simply Catering Building on the corner of Salisbury and Madras Streets was damaged and subsequently demolished. They were replaced by new, low-rise buildings.

Westende Jewelers, located on the corner of Manchester St and Worcester St, was destroyed after the walls of the upper floor Mexican restaurant collapsed. The Westende House was rebuilt but has since been demolished to allow Manchester St.
