Waffle House Index sees 365 restaurants turn red during pandemic

Five waffle houses at Hampton Roads are “Index Red” and are closed. The rest are open for take-out only.

NORFOLK, Virginia. Waffle House reports that 365 of its restaurants are “red”, which means they have closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, more than 1,600 locations are “green” and remain open, although many are now only take-out.

The number of waffle houses that are red, yellow or green makes up the “waffle house index”. It is an unusual – though fairly accurate – way that the Federal Emergency Management Agency sometimes measures the severity of a natural disaster by counting the number of waffle houses that turn “red”.

EHS Today in 2011 said if a Waffle House store is open and offers a full menu, the index is green. If it is open but it is used from a limited menu, it is yellow. When the location has been forced to close, the index finger is red.

Because Waffle House is well prepared for disasters, the index rarely turns red.

Waffle House released figures on the severity of the coronavirus “storm” on Tuesday, announcing on social media that 365 sites have been closed and 1,627 are still open.

You will notice that there is a prominent red dot on Hampton Roads. As of March 24, five local waffle houses are “Index Red” and are closed:
