Groundbreaking Initiative Addresses Shortage of Personal Protective Equipment for Nations Health Workers Following COVID-19 Pandemic | Business, finance and technology

ATLANTA – (BUSINESS WIRE) – March 24, 2020 –

World Center for Medical Innovation (GCMI), the first and only innovation center for medical devices in the Southeast, announced today a collaboration that resolves the serious shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect hospital workers in the country against the COVID-19 pandemic. The initiative provides, free of charge, designs, with necessary regulatory guidelines, for any manufacturing facility that conforms to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) for use in the production and distribution of face shields to healthcare workers.

Our goal is to enable manufacturers to produce hundreds of face shields per day to supply healthcare workers and hospitals across the country, as well as to provide open source design for others to manufacture these screens around the world. said Dr. Newton. The initiative was born out of necessity due to the shortage of PPE facing hospital and health workers across the country in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is an unprecedented time for all of us and collaboration is essential to find solutions.

The facial mask aims to extend the life of the current N95 inventory, while protecting the healthcare professional from contamination events. The shield is a transparent barrier covering the user’s face which reduces the amount of virus coming into contact with the user’s eyes and respiratory mask.

Our team is working on a rapid response for mass-produced face shields, said Dr. Chris Saldana, associate professor of manufacturing at Georgia Techs George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering. In proposing this design, we explored both the rigid frame and the origami-style face shields for the open source design and manufacturing of these essential products. We were fortunate to take advantage of multiple rapid prototyping and manufacturing capabilities at both the Georgia Techs Invention Studio and the Global Center for Medical Innovation.

The collaboration provides manufacturers with free design of their GMP compliant face shield, allowing them to use their facilities to produce the shields. In just four days, the collective resources of the teams developed a computer-aided design (CAD) face shield and a prototype that is available for use.
