Prayer for the victims of the 2018 Hokkaido earthquake

ATSUMA, Hokkaido – Prayers were held on Sunday for the victims of the powerful earthquake that struck southern regions of Hokkaido two years ago.

In the town of Atsuma, where 37 people were killed by landslides, Mayor Shoichiro Miyasaka and city employees performed silent prayer at the municipal welfare center at noon.

In a message to residents sent over a wireless disaster prevention system, Miyasaka expressed his determination to rebuild.

He told reporters later: “We want to work with all residents to overcome difficulties, while showing lasting sympathy for others.”

A flower stand was erected at the site of a landslide where the ground was leveled.

“This is not the place I remember. It’s hard to see,” said Noriko Nakata, 42, who lost her older brother in the earthquake.

She said, “I want to thank him for watching me.”

The pre-dawn earthquake occurred on September 6, 2018, reaching a maximum level of 7 on the Japan seismic intensity scale. And 44 people were killed in the earthquake, including three who died of indirect causes, and more than 2,300 homes were destroyed or severely damaged.
